Anxiety, by Google’s definition, is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease about an event or an uncertain outcome. Psychiatrically speaking, it is a nervous disorder characterized by a state of excessive uneasiness and apprehension, typically with compulsive behavior or panic attacks. Those who suffer from anxiety may not even know that they do. What they do and feel all seems like the normal to them, but every once in a while they may notice that everyone else seems to have a certain act to them that said person cannot portrait. Anxiety often results in compulsive behavior. One may wake in the morning and have their whole day already planned out for them. Reason being is that they have a certain routine that they go through almost every day however it is scheduled in their mind. Besides doing the same things over and over every day, other compulsive behaviors include avoiding cracks on the sidewalk, avoiding contact with others, a problem with change, perfectionism, etc. If we take a couple of examples from the movie â€Å"As Good as it Gets (1997)† you could get an understanding of how one with anxiety thinks and acts. In the movie, the main character Melvin Udall is a misunderstood, as well as misunderstanding, person who goes through many of problems without an understanding of why. If you watched the movie you will notice that Melvin doesn’t have any friends. Together we can do great things.† Searching for a definition of leadership can be best served when drawing upon experiences from some of the world’s greatest leaders. For me, it is Mother Theresa who has defined the idea of leadership best. It may seem a bit cliche to quote her when addressing the particular topic, but no one has set a definition more true than Mother Theresa herself. It is the mere act of leading by example that can propel leaders to greatness. There are some personality traits that peek through during childhood that give a sign of what an individual could potentially achieve in their lifetime. Reaction of the Audience Essay The costumes were, at the start, simply grey, plain jumpsuits. However, as the play progressed and more characters emerged, tiny significant details began to appear. The main idea, I think, of the jumpsuits, was to show that in 1984 individualism was over run by society. However, as we learned more about different people and their views, little pieces of their personality are seen in the costumes. For example, Julias red sash symbolized danger, love, and her bold nature, while Winston wore a jumpsuit that was a slightly different color to the rest of the characters, which symbolised however hard Winston tried to be good and follow the rules, there would always be parts of him that didnt want to be the same as everybody else. For a more understandable reason, the slight changes of costume helped identify the different characters the actors played. They helped us relate well to the characters, and understand their actions better, which makes the performance so much easier to follow. Lighting  Although during 1984 lighting never seemed important, or even noticeable, remembering the changes of brightness and color for each scene reminded me just how much it contributed to the mood of the performance. Blackouts were used not only in the short pauses between scenes, but also in the scene in the Ministry of Love. It was an extremely effective use of blackouts, and not only did it symbolise time moving very elegantly, but it also set the mood for the torture scenes: creepy, and very disturbing. Throughout the rest of the performance, the lights used were quite dim, suiting well with the bleak set, and the only strong, pure lights came from the screens in the background. This made sure that the screens at the back, and Big Brother, were never forgotten. Characterisation  My favorite actor has to be Carolyn Tomkinson. She had such a constant, brilliant quality throughout all the characters she played, including the cook, Mrs Parsons, Winstons mother, and the prostitute, who was, overall, my favorite. I loved the way Carolyn, with only small changes of costume, completely transformed from a drunk, cackling, cockney woman to Winstons beautiful mother. This is a prime example of how the actors morphed into other people, with the prostitutes body tension low, and her gestures wide and exaggerated, and Winstons mother standing up right, arms by her sides, and a gentle smile on her face. The body language of the prostitute was easy and carefree, while Winstons mother was reassuring. Carolyn says, it is quite a challenge in the sense that I have to pay many different roles, and then, I need to find a clear distinction between each character, Chris Gardener, the actor who had the role of OBrian, also says, Multi-role playing throws up many challenges clarity of thought, quick rounded characters speed from scene to scene, lines! They clearly show their concern on making sure the individual characters stands out, and the audience follows each of them and understand the quick, sharp changes that make the play so unique. The Ensemble  Northern Broadsides, the Theatre Company behind the production, is very well known for producing Greek Theatre. An element of this shown in 1984 was the use of choral speaking by the chorus. At any one time, most actors were present, either as characters involved in the scene or members of the chorus, either narrating the feelings of the characters or simply standing and watching, portraying the aspect of Big Brother, of never being alone. Props  In the overall performance, the number of props used was very small. To name a few, I remember clearly the briefcase, the diary and the piece of coral in the glass ball. The briefcase was where Winston kept his secret diary and Gold Steins book, it drew the audiences attention whenever he carried it with him, making them wonder what else he kept in there, what other secrets he had hidden. Without realising it, having the diary was his first act against Big Brother, a life changing move. The piece of coral was sold by the antique shop owner, whom Winston had trusted, and I believe the coral was a symbol of hope for not only him and Julia, but also for the individuals inside the society of 1984. The coral followed the story Winston went through, from understanding the government was corrupt, to being arrested by the police, the coral smashing ont o the floor, all hope shattered. Reaction of the Audience  The general reaction of the audience towards the performance was awe. The quality of the acting was taken into account and its pure brilliance kept the audience silent. However, as the scenes got braver, and the torture and room 101 scenes played out, the reaction shifted to shock, and pity towards Winston. Most members of the audience were not used to the brutality of the torture scenes, however, I loved them, and one of my friends said, its better than some pantomime, which I agreed with. The oranges and lemons fiasco gained a laugh, which was lovely to have behind the depressed atmosphere. The majority of the time, the audience was silent out of respect of the seriousness of the play. Most of my peers enjoyed it, some of them not quite used to the openness of the play, but while some see it as a negative, I think it as a huge positive. Movement  Movement was a vital part of the performance. It had to be beautifully executed, but used well, which the actors in 1984 did. Some uses included the movements the actors did in cannon, for example when Winston was in his work cubical, the other characters did individual actions that created a very realistic setting. Characters also used movement to make their personalities stand out, like their posture, or their walk. The actors also used movement to show their emotions, for example the prostitute slumped and leaned in all directions, giving subtle hints that she was possibly drunk. Throughout the whole show, movement was used excellently. Conclusion  Overall, I believe the strongest aspect of the performance was the actors, and the way they changed from character to character. It was unique, and made the play special. I have seen performances before that use the same technique, however I have never seen it so expertly done, and so many character changes in such a short amount of time. The show 1984 was a pleasure to watch and unique. Not holding back made the performance truly incredible and will remain one of my favorites.

Cancer Causing Agent Under Osha Regulations According to the Text book by Gayle Woodside â€Å"A chemical is considered to be a carcinogen or cancer-causing agent under OSHA regulations if it has been evaluated by the international Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and is listed in the IARC latest edition of monographs as carcinogen or potential carcinogen†(Woodside 1999). By using the correct PPE in according to the MSDS for the right task it can reduce the risk of cancers for employees and first responders. Most physically hazardous injuries a majority of the time will be from burns and normally be from a chemical burns or burns from flames or explosions. Welding metal can switch metal to a temporary hazardous material which can cause burns, by physically changing the metal by increasing the heat that is applied to the metal whether aluminum or steel and or some of other alloy. According to OSHA â€Å"The intense light associated with welding operations can cause serious and sometimes permanent eye damage if operators do not wear proper eye protection. The intensity of light or radiant energy produced by welding, cutting or brazing operations varies according to a number of factors including the task producing the light, the electrode size and the arc current† (OSHA 2012). When possible the engineering controls should be in place, in the working environment to reduce risk to personal when working with or around hazardous material and or hazardous waste. These engineering controls can include storage, transportation and handling of hazardous material. According to OHSA â€Å"Controlling a hazard at its source is the best way to protect employees. Depending on the hazard or workplace conditions, OSHA recommends the use of engineering or work practice controls to manage or eliminate hazards to the greatest extent possible†(OSHA 2012). This may be an expense that an employer may not want to pay, but in the long run it will pay for itself. There will be situations in which adding engineering controls are not achievable and the increased risk may be required in order to complete the assignment. So when risk are required and â€Å"When engineering, work practice and administrative controls are not feasible or do not provide sufficient protection, employers must provide personal protective equipment (PPE) to their employees and ensure its use† (OSHA 2012). Employers and employees should both beware that there are different levels of PPE; Level â€Å"A† is the highest amount of protection that PPE can provide and level â€Å"D† is the minimum level of protection. To use a level â€Å"D† protection when level â€Å"A† is required could have dangerous results. For example it would be similar to replacing a full face respirator for a dust mask. Because of toxic vapors, gases, and dust particulates from hazardous material, daily work activities place personal at risk. Due to this reason, personal that work in that environment and first response personnel must wear applicable PPE and equipment while they are in a hazardous area. It is important to known about the hazards in your work space or for first responders a at emergency response location that contain hazards, which make it the easier to select the right level of PPE. So there are actually four levels of PPE which are A, B, C and D, D being the lowest level of protection. Let’s review each of level of protection starting with the highest level â€Å"Level A protection is required when the greatest potential for exposure to hazards exists, and when the greatest level of skin, respiratory, and eye protection is required† (EPA 2015). Level A will also be your most expensive PPE in comparison to the other level of protections. These models to some extent contradict to the traditional business models, as the aim of latter is to primarily provide financial returns to shareholders. However, social business models have been conceptualised on the idea and rationale of contributing substantially to the community, and are built with the vision of achieving a social objective (Donaldson et al, 2011). A social objective in this term may refer to socially responsible objectives which are aimed at improving the lives of individuals living within a community. Yunus and Weber (2010) for example, state that this could include setting up infrastructures and facilities and ensuring that individuals have an appropriate standard of living. However, the social responsibility of the social business model, seems to go one step further, which is to structure its business according to its social objective aim, whic h is in contrast to traditional business models that structure their businesses according to their core value offering, and only after profits have been made, would they now contribute a portion to their CSR objective. This essay is going to assess the business models adopted by social businesses, and compare them against traditional business models to ascertain whether, and to what extent, they are different from one another (1). Grameen Veolia Water Ltd is a water company that builds and operates water production and treatment plans in several poor villages in Bangladesh. It is a joint venture between a multinational corporation and local healthcare company which required an upfront investment of eight hundred thousand dollars. Their main aim is to develop projects in five villages, where the company would produce and deliver drinking water, which would then be sold at the factory location for a profit (Yunus Centre, 2009). In essence, the company’s business model was to identify a social problem – drinking water, and invest in infrastructure that would enable the company to meet the demand in the region. The water is being paid for, which enables the company to cover its investments. According to Yunus and Weber (2010), the profits from this investment are re-invested back into the business and enable the company to expand its operations and further assist in solving the problem of water short age in several other regions. The business model adopted by Grameen Veolia Water Ltd in Bangladesh can be considered as a social business model because it has a non-dividend, non-loss policy as depicted by Yunus and Weber (2010), which initially conceptualised the social business model. However, by comparing it against a similar business, it would be easy to identify to which extent they are similar, or different from the traditional business models. Thames Water is the UK’s largest water and wastewater Services Company which supplies millions of houses across London and 2.6 billion litres of tap water daily. Its primary business model, as seen from its website, is to build the relevant infrastructure required to pump millions of litres into London homes daily, and send them a monthly or quarterly bill. Basically, when reviewing both businesses, it seems that their models fit the same pattern, which is to build relevant infrastructures required to deliver water to customers. Grameen Veolia accomplishes tha t by delivering at the factory gate to individuals, whilst Thames Water accomplishes it by pumping into millions of London homes. The main question here is to determine if both models are different or the same lies in the definition of a business model itself. Chesbrough and Rosenbloom (2000) stated that the term business models, whilst frequently used to illustrate different strategies and functions within an organisation is not always explicitly defined. Authors offer a definition by KMLab, a consulting firm, which defines business models as â€Å"a description of how [a] company intends to create value in the market place. Business models include the unique combination of products, services, images and distributions that a particular company carries forward. It also includes the underlying organisation of people and the operational infrastructure that they use to accomplish their work†. (2). Also, Magretta (2002) describes a business model as the method of doing business in which an organisation sustains itself and generates revenues by specifying its position in the value chain. From all these definitions states that a business model describes how an organisation utilises its resources in order to generate revenues. Several busi ness models exist, and they are usually distinct based on the industry within which they operate. Linder and Cantrell (2000) for example, in their Accenture publication state that business models differ based on their unifying concept, and include price models, convenience models, experience models, channel models, and trust models, all of which define how a company does business and generates revenue. Even though they do not specify exactly what a traditional or social business model entails, the term business model is unique amongst both terms and therefore it is safe to assume that every other business model, apart from the â€Å"social business model† – is a traditional business model. Furthermore, in trying to ease the commonly held confusion about what actually constitutes a business model, Linder and Cantrell (2000) outlined the components of a business model, which in essence entail the various factors that constitute any business model. These components seek to further explain the fact that a business model is limited to the process in which a business creates value for its shareholders and generates revenues. Referring back to the water businesses that have been outlined earlier, it is clear that both entities create value by making water accessible. Thames Water manages the problem by creating the relevant infrastructure, and pumping millions of water into households daily, while Grameen Veolia has accomplished that by selling it directly to individuals. This could only be achieved due to the level of infrastructure available that makes it possible for the company to achieve this feat. It is probably only in developed countries that a central system is in pl ace that makes it possible for water to be pumped into millions of households which might not be the case in developing countries. They may not have the relevant infrastructure, especially in remote towns in Bangladesh where Grameen Veolia has chosen to operate. However, this presents a viable business opportunity. If a company were established in these locations that offered a low cost approach to getting clean fresh water, then it would succeed. This follows on from a similar strategy adopted by Wal-Mart in the 1950’s when it chose to focus on remote towns where there was little infrastructure which has created difficult barriers to entry for competitors. Even though Sam Walton’s (Wal-Mart’s founder) goal was not inherently social, by targeting these markets and offering them value – everyday low prices on big brands, they managed to achieve astronomical success. According to Therefore, socially, Grameen Veolia may be accomplishing a social objective, a nd in the process, providing a poor society with affordable water, but they are investing private money into this feat, and consequently making profit out of this investment, which inherently, according to the definition of a business model, is a traditional business. The only difference between this model and that of Thames Water in the UK is the availability of infrastructure, which has made theirs more appropriate for their environment. Since this essay has now established that the basic business model of both the traditional business and the social business are the same, the next step is to identify their major differences and ascertain whether that constitutes to the deviation from the traditional business model. According to Yunus and Weber (2010), the key characteristics of a social business are for the business objective to overcome poverty; attain financial and economic sustainability, return back the initial investment capital of investors; retain profit in the business for expansion and improvement; environmental consciousness; and market wage alongside better than standard working conditions for the workforce. However, based on Linder and Cantrell’s (2000) discussion on the constituents of a business model, alongside other definitions used in this study, it seems that these characteristics do not constitute the definition of a business model, but more like the CSR policy of an organisation. According to Kotler and Lee (2005), â€Å"corporate social responsibility is a commitment to improve community well-being through discretionary business practices and contribution of corporate resources†. By the use of the term discretionary, Kotler and Lee disregard companies that are obligated to act socially because of the law, or because it is ethical or moral and therefore expected. It defines businesses that choose to do good for their community based on internal policies. Therefore, based on this definition, it seems that social business models, as defined by Yunus and Weber (2010), may inherent identify (3) traditional business models that have a CSR policy centred on targeting the community. Furthermore, their investor reimbursement model, which specifies a non-dividend, non-loss policy, in which the investor gets back only what they invested is essentially only a policy and in no way affects their business model of delivering value to customers and increasing revenue. Even though this model may deter investors that seek a return on their invested capital, it could also attract investors such as Google for example, who have a CSR initiative, and may view it as a method of diversifying their portfolio with a social investment. Therefore, based on these arguments, it seems that the major factors that distinguish a social business model, from that of a traditional business, are the CSR initiatives and the investor models, which are seemingly only company policies that have minimal effect on how companies create value and increase revenue. The minimal effect that these policies have on creating value, could however define how they distinguish themselves from competitors – if any, and appeal to customers, employees and investors (Petit and Yunus, 2010). For instance, if there were two companies operating within the same market, offering the same goods and adopting the same model – one of which was a social business and the other a more traditional business, the social business may gain more traction and popularity from more ethically conscious and socially responsible customers. This argument is based on CSR theories of Kotler and Lee (2005), which depict that an organisation’s CSR policies could assist it its competitive advantage, especially in the sort of customers and employees it could attract. This essay has reviewed the business models of two water companies, with the aim of identifying their underlying business structure, and determining whether and to what extent, the social business model of a Bangladeshi water company differs from the traditional business model of a UK water company. Our analyses show that business models of both companies are ideally traditional business models, but they have been adapted to fit the particular environment within which they operate. However, the core aspects of a business model, which are the value creation for customers and increasing profits, apply to both organisations. Therefore, based on the arguments set out in this paper and the discussion of both business models, it appears that the social business models are only a mere re-invention of the traditional business models, in that they seek to create customer value and generate profit. However, their core difference lies in their CSR and investor models, which is centred majorly o n improving a social factor. This model is ideal from a social perspective as it actively combines a traditional model, with a non-for- profit agenda. It can be therefore concluded that social business model would give any aspiring business an advantage over its competitors especially in generic industries, as some customers, employees and investors may be attracted to its social goals and objectives.
